Our Client provides specialist Intellectual Property translation and information services. They have a dedicated division providing translation, documentation and localisation services to the medical, pharmaceutical, chemical, engineering and telecoms industries.
They are now seeking Scientific & Engineering Translators. These positions are full-time permanent roles and will be office based in the Home Counties.
Job Purpose
Translators are responsible for producing complete and accurate translations in accordance with client specified requirements. Translators generally dictate their work. Translations are subject to independent proofreading and then returned to the original translator for validation (the “approval” process)
Key Responsibilities
The accurate and complete production of translations of documents primarily patents and other related linguistic tasks (including ad hoc proofreading and approval as required).
Daily checking of forthcoming work schedules and liaison with Translation Coordinator
Liaison with the allocation team and production team as required
Review of each job ticket for specific translation order requirements
Clear dictation of translations
Drawing customer’s attention to flaws in source text
Resolution of individual text queries
Use of research methods to resolve queries
Assistance to production staff as required
Signing of certificates
Attendance at notary as necessary
Input to Sales team as necessary
Approval of own work after proofreading
Checking other translators’ work when resource planning demands
Cover for colleagues’ approvals as required
Qualifications / Experience
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German and at least a degree level qualification in physics. Knowledge of optics essential OR
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German plus at least a degree level qualification in materials science. Knowledge of construction would be of interest. French knowledge an advantage but not essential OR
Danish mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of English plus at least a degree level qualification in chemistry or biochemistry. German would be an advantage but is not essential OR
French mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of English and at least a degree level qualification in physics, electronics or telecommunications. German knowledge an advantage but not essential OR
French mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of English and at least a degree level qualification in chemistry or biochemistry. German knowledge preferable but not essential OR
French mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of English and at least a degree level qualification in mechanical, electrical or automotive engineering. German knowledge preferable but not essential OR
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German and/or French plus at least a degree level qualification in mechanical engineering OR
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German and/or French plus at least a degree level qualification in chemical engineering OR
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German and at least a degree level qualification in electrical engineering. Defence/military experience or knowledge of heavy switchgear would be ideal OR
English mother tongue level, excellent knowledge of German and at least a degree level qualification (preferably a PhD) in chemistry. We have a requirement for chemists with knowledge of any of the following fields – construction chemistry, paper chemistry, leather making and printing plate technology plus catalysis, thermoplastics and textile chemistry. Significant industrial experience and knowledge of general organic nomenclature are essential OR

A PhD and additional language qualifications are also desirable
Previous translation/proofreading experience / specific industry or research sector knowledge & experience / knowledge of other languages / experience in intellectual property is desirable

In return our client is offering a competitive package including a basic salary of between £30,000 and £40,000 per annum (salary is negotiable and more may be available for an exceptional candidate) plus benefits which include pension, private healthcare and bonus scheme.
